I have thought a lot about memory, what it is and why it works the way it does. Sometimes it is experienced as something good and good when you remember old fond memories. Something to be grateful for. Sometimes it is experienced as a gift if you do not remember certain events or boring things in life. This is also something to be grateful for. With age you may notice that you forget names and places or what day it is more easily and that is the case for many people.
In the book A Course in Miracles I read about “Memory in the Present.” It is so interesting and the reading gives a completely different picture of what memory is. It is not at all what I have thought in my own separate mind. It is truly something absolutely wonderful if you choose to use it right.
In the textbook I read the following: “You have been so long accustomed to believing that memory contains only what is past, that it is difficult for you to realize that it is a skill that can remember now. The limitations on memory that the world imposes on it are as extensive as those that you allow the world to impose on you.
There is no link of memory to the past. If you would have it there, then there it is. But only your desire made the link, and only you have held it to a part of time where guilt appears to linger still.” Exciting, isn’t it?
Let go of your old way of remembering the past. Trust that your creator, Love, is in the memory. But this is not a memory of past events but only of a present state. All guilt is gone because its effects are no longer here.
I read further: “The miracle comes quietly into the mind that stops for a moment and is still. From this silence, and from the mind that it healed in silence then, it reaches gently to other minds to share its silence.”
I want to be who I truly am, remember the Love that is in my mind and in my heart, not remember anything that I have taught myself but instead be in the present and feel the presence of Love.
